Let’s Talk Gambling: Ixia Venture Capital Fund & Studio (Part 2)
Here’s the second installment of when Talk Gambling recently sat down with Ixia Capital founder & CEO Mona Motwani to learn about their latest project and how it will benefit our industry. Here’s Part One of the interview for those that missed it.
Apart from India, Ixia Capital also focuses on Africa and the UAE. What opportunities do you see in these regions for gaming and related technologies?
The opportunities in Africa and the UAE are distinctly compelling, each region offering unique advantages that align perfectly with Ixia Capital’s strategic vision. Let me break down our perspective on each market.
If we look at Africa first, I’m really excited about the trajectory we’re seeing here. The gaming industry is projected to surpass $1 billion in revenue by 2024, and what’s fascinating is the mobile-first nature of the market – 95% of gamers are using mobile devices. From my analytical perspective, this presents a clear direction for investment and development.
The reasons behind this optimism are Africa’s unique market demographic with over 60% of the population under the age of 25, providing a robust and growing customer base for gaming companies. Another key factor is the increased adoption of digital payments, with platforms like M-Pesa and MTN Mobile Money enabling seamless microtransactions—critical for gaming.
Turning to the UAE, the landscape is dramatically different but equally exciting. Some of the key opportunities that exist are down to the UAE’s strategic positioning that acts as a perfect gateway between Eastern and Western markets.
There is also highly developed infrastructure and government support through initiatives like Dubai’s Vision 2021. Lastly, a multicultural environment that can serve as a testing ground for global products.
Both markets have huge upside where the UAE can serve as a technological hub and gateway, while Africa offers massive scale and growth potential. Through our studio model, we’re able to develop projects that can leverage these synergies while respecting local market needs.
Are there any unique challenges or cultural considerations when investing in these markets?
From my extensive experience navigating diverse markets, Africa and the UAE present immense opportunities, they also come with unique challenges that require thoughtful, market-specific approaches. In Africa, the primary challenge is infrastructure—marked by inconsistent internet connectivity, unreliable power supply, and varying mobile network quality across regions.
At Ixia Capital, we’re addressing this through innovative solutions like offline gaming capabilities and adaptive streaming technologies, ensuring our products remain accessible and enjoyable regardless of infrastructure limitations.
The cultural landscape in Africa presents another fascinating challenge – one that’s actually an opportunity in disguise. With the continent’s rich tapestry of languages, traditions, and storytelling heritage, we’re focusing on creating culturally authentic content through our studio model. This involves deep collaboration with local creators and a thorough understanding of regional preferences. The market fragmentation, with multiple regulatory frameworks and payment systems across different countries, requires us to maintain flexibility and local adaptability in our approach.
The UAE presents a distinctly different set of considerations. Having personally attended numerous gaming events in the region, including a memorable eSports event in Abu Dhabi last year, I’ve observed that success here hinges on maintaining an impeccable balance between innovation and cultural sensitivity. The market demands cutting-edge technology and premium experiences while requiring strict adherence to Islamic values and local customs. The regulatory landscape, particularly with the General Commercial Gaming Regulatory Authority (GCGRA) guidelines, is evolving rapidly, making it crucial for us to maintain strong relationships with regulatory bodies and adapt our strategies accordingly.
Our mitigation approach at Ixia Capital is comprehensive and market-specific. We’ve established strong local partnerships that help us navigate cultural nuances and regulatory requirements in both regions. Through our studio model, we’re creating content that respects local values while implementing appropriate monetization models.
The $20 million investment fund is an impressive commitment. What are your expectations for the next five years? How many startups does Ixia Capital aim to launch, and what impact do you hope to achieve?
The $20 million investment fund at Ixia Capital represents more than just capital deployment – it’s our strategic commitment to reshaping the gaming landscape in emerging markets. Over the next five years, through our unique VC Studio model, we aim to launch 10-15 carefully curated projects. These initiatives are designed to address market gaps in India, Africa, and the UAE, while targeting annual returns of 30-50%.
Looking at our five-year horizon, we’ve structured our growth in phases. The initial two years will focus on launching three to four foundational projects and establishing core infrastructure. Years three and four will see us scaling successful projects across regions and launching between four and six additional initiatives. By year five, we expect to achieve market leadership in specific gaming segments and set-up another three to five advanced technology projects leveraging AI, blockchain, and cloud gaming solutions.
From my experience leading government relations at Sportradar in the Indian Subcontinent, I’ve learned the importance of building sustainable ecosystems. That’s why our impact metrics go beyond financial returns. We’re tracking economic impact through job creation, technology advancement through infrastructure development, and social impact through community building and skills development. In markets like Africa, where we see 185 million active gamers, or India with its 568 million gamers, the potential for meaningful impact is substantial.
Our studio model gives us unique advantages in achieving these goals. We can pivot quickly based on market feedback, allocate resources more efficiently across projects, and maintain stronger alignment with local market needs.
How do you assess the risk-reward balance when investing in early-stage companies in the gaming and crypto space?
At Ixia Capital, our approach to assessing risk-reward balance in early-stage gaming and crypto investments is deeply methodical, shaped by my experience in the industry.
The foundation of our risk assessment lies in comprehensive market analysis. When evaluating opportunities, we look beyond surface-level metrics to understand deep market dynamics. Consider our target markets – India with 568 million gamers, Africa with 185 million active gamers, and the UAE’s rapidly evolving gaming ecosystem. These numbers are compelling, but our analysis delves deeper into user engagement patterns, monetization potential, and market readiness.
Our focus revolves around four key factors, market dynamics, regulatory compliance, technical feasibility and financial metrics. When assessing market dynamics, we analyse infrastructure readiness, user adoption patterns, competitive landscape, and payment ecosystem maturity.
Regulation sets out the framework for growth so we must have an in-depth knowledge of requirements to ensure we’re laying down a foundation for long-term growth.
Considerations around potential for scalability, security, integration capabilities, and technology stack viability are important too. The finishing piece is assuring there are clear monetisation paths to returns on investment,
Our risk management strategy is further enhanced by our portfolio approach, where we create synergies across projects through shared infrastructure, cross-platform user acquisition, and unified compliance frameworks. This approach helps us optimize resource allocation while minimizing individual project risks.
The gaming and crypto industries are constantly evolving. How does Ixia Capital stay ahead of the curve? What strategies do you employ to adapt to changing trends and technologies?
At Ixia Capital, staying ahead of industry evolution is deeply ingrained in our operational DNA. During my time at Sportradar and now at Ixia Capital, I’ve learned that success in these dynamic sectors requires not just observing trends but actively participating in shaping them. We ensure that we stay more agile and responsive to industry changes, implementing innovations directly across our projects rather than just advising portfolio companies.
Our approach to staying ahead of the curve is multifaceted and data-driven. We maintain a robust market intelligence system that combines data analytics, user behavior analysis, and direct market feedback. This is complemented by our active participation in industry events and our strong network of experts and advisors.
Technology innovation is at the heart of our adaptation strategy. We’re particularly focused on cloud gaming solutions for emerging markets, AI-driven personalization, and blockchain applications beyond basic tokenization. Our studio model allows us to experiment with these technologies in controlled environments and quickly scale successful innovations across multiple projects. This has proven especially valuable in our target markets of India, Africa, and the UAE, where technological needs and user preferences can vary significantly.
Our infrastructure development focuses on creating scalable, cross-platform compatible systems that can adapt to changing market needs. We’re building robust security protocols and enhanced user experiences that can evolve with technological advancements. The regulatory landscape is also a key consideration in strategy.
Through our studio model, we maintain direct control over project development and can implement changes rapidly based on market feedback. This allows us to not just react to industry changes but to actively participate in shaping them.
