The great convergence: The lines between sports media, fan engagement & betting are disappearing

The Great Convergence Mark Phillip Metabet

Given the rapid convergence of sports media, fan engagement, and betting, where do you see the most significant friction point for operators trying to integrate these areas effectively?

I remember sitting on a flight about a decade ago, stuck on the tarmac, with no departure time in sight, and couldn’t have been happier. The NFL RedZone Channel, the gold standard of live sports curation, was available on the seat-back entertainment, and suddenly I was in zero hurry. Granted, it was just one sport, but that level of whip-around coverage felt like magic.

Fast-forward to today, and super-intelligent curation is everywhere–from choosing a movie to watch, a meal to get delivered, or an app to doomscroll in. The average fan doesn’t go to operators or sports media to get a curated rundown of the day’s news–they go to their favorite social feed.

If I were running a sportsbook, competing with Instagram and TikTok would be what keeps me up at night. The “watch and bet” and “bet and watch” virtuous circles have been proven over and over again, but there are no quality sports-specific curated experiences. A sportsbook that could alert me when matches get exciting, surface highlights for the matches that I miss, and give me intelligent wagers all in one, would be an immediate install.

How is MetaBet leveraging personalised content and contextual data to move beyond simple product pitching and make betting feel like a natural extension of the fan experience?

We believe that authenticity is key to everything. The average sports fan is beaten over the head with gaming ads, and they’re all pretty much pitching the same thing, whether it’s digital, out-of-home, or TV.

Scanning an article, intelligently choosing the most complementary wager for that match, team, or player, and then surfacing it in a fraction of a second is a foundational piece of our monetization tech. But that’s only part of the problem! One in three days of the year has 100+ matches, and on Saturdays in November, we often see more than 500. Excitement Analytics, the patented algorithms that find (and predict) exciting matches in real time, is our not-so-secret weapon, using a triple overtime or massive upset as the engagement hook with wagers as an add-on, instead of the other way around.

With creator ecosystems becoming central to engagement, what role do you see them playing in driving betting behaviour, and how does MetaBet support this?

The best compliment we’ve ever received is that our technology is like magic. Many of our customers are large enterprises with dedicated tech teams, but we often work with independent creators who need the technology to just work. Creators are becoming more and more important because they’re only successful if they’re tuned in to their fans’ needs. They can obsess over their fans and be confident that we’re keeping everything running behind the scenes.

Can you share an example of how MetaBet uses live engagement data to build a narrative that keeps fans watching and betting simultaneously?

I’m writing this on a Wednesday night, and just got a WNBA alert that the Portland Fire have come back from 29-down against the Minnesota Lynx, and there are two minutes left in the fourth. I can’t name a player on either team, but I immediately clicked to tune in.

Everyone knows when the Champions League Final and the Super Bowl are happening. It’s the ability to flag great matches in real time that sets us apart and unlocks the most revenue opportunities for our brand, media, and operator customers.

Looking ahead, what is the single biggest opportunity arising from this convergence that most operators are currently underestimating?

Discovery is the lowest-hanging fruit! I’ve worked in sports tech for two decades, and I still have trouble remembering which channel a match is on. As the number of matches each year continues to grow, and the number of subscriptions needed to watch your team grows even faster, the frustration in trying to find a broadcast is a pain point for fans worldwide.

Operators (and anyone else in media) who can help get fans to the live match, in the last DVR-resistant genre on TV, can extract meaningful revenue and brand loyalty from being the trusted sports concierge.
